Acne is a condition that results from the combination of excessive sebum production, the plugging of pores, and the inflammatory action of skin bacteria. Features of acne include blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, pustules, and cysts which may result in permanent scarring and skin discoloration. Above all, it is important to get effective treatments for acne to prevent permanent scarring.

The inflammation associated with acne may produce changes in the color of the skin. Redness or purple discoloration accompanying the acne will gradually settle once the acne has been brought under control.  Laser treatment can reduce unwanted redness.

People who tan easily may develop brown discoloration. Minimizing sun exposure together with the regular application of sunscreen and wearing wide-brimmed hats will help prevent further darkening of the skin. Creams that reduce pigment production, as well as chemical peels, can help reduce the discoloration.

Some people may even develop whitened patches from acne.
