Lax skin or loose sagging skin along with folds and wrinkles on the face and body is typically caused by the aging process and the effects of photo aging (sun exposure). Rapid loss of weight can also result in lax skin.

Due to aging, the loss of elastin – protein in the connective tissue causing the stretched skin to retract – along with a reduction in the amount of collagen and moisture-holding proteins results in the loosening and stretching of the skin.

The effects of photo aging or sun damage speed up this natural process of increased laxity of the skin. Sun damage can be minimized by the daily use of a UVA/UVB sunscreen and carefully chosen skin products containing retinoids and adequate amounts of Vitamin C and E.  The effects of constant exposure to the sun are cumulative and may not be apparent at first.
